ULI Honors Multistudio, Studio-MLA and Team for Market Street Reimagined Competition

‘San Francisco’s Living Heart’ Wins ULI Award

Studio-MLA in collaboration with Multistudio, Systematica, and Vibemap honored in ULI’s Market Street Reimagined Competition

SAN FRANCISCO (July 17, 2025)‘San Francisco’s Living Heart’ was named a winning proposal in ULI San Francisco’s Market Street Reimagined competition, receiving the Award for Place-Making and Connected Neighborhoods. Selected from over 170 entries, the esteemed jury praised the proposal as “a workable strategy” that invites San Franciscans to inhabit Market Street not just as a way through, but as a space to gather, rest, move, and connect.

San Francisco’s Living Heart boardThis was a collaborative vision between Multistudio, Studio-MLA, Systematica, and Vibemap — a team shaped by systems-thinkers, urban designers, landscape architects, architects, mobility visualization experts, app inventors, and public life advocates. Together, we asked: What would it take to transform a corridor into a civic commons? Not just resilient by design, but alive with everyday life?

The proposal reimagines Market Street as emotionally resonant, ecologically grounded, and socially magnetic. A civic spine tuned to the rhythms of the people it serves.

The team envisions:
• A revived Market Loop linking the Ferry Building to Civic Center through an integrated multimodal system for walking, biking, rolling, and historic streetcars
• A people-first street, free of private cars and designed for all ages and abilities
Native plantings that restore biodiversity and carry cultural memory forward
Flexible infrastructure to support everyday life, from play to protest
• A reimagined Hallidie Plaza as a layered civic grove where transit, gardens, and gathering space converge

Under tree canopies and along textured planting corridors, movement, reflection, and spontaneous connection coexist. Memory lives in the planting palette — scent, season, and species echoing both ecological past and cultural present.

San Francisco’s Living Heart is a blueprint for a more connective, joyful, and inclusive downtown. We’re honored to be part of this civic moment, and excited by what’s possible when we imagine streets as spaces of public life, not just movement.

Thank you to ULI San Francisco, Civic Joy Fund, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, and the esteemed jurors for this recognition.
