Studio-MLA is working with BIG to transform an aging, riverfront industrial site in the Arts District into a new mixed-use development with flexible, creative office space, affordable and market-rate housing, hotel, and a range of commercial and retail uses. Restaurants, art galleries, and public parks and plazas will help enliven the neighborhood day and night. Floating decks bridge the rail line separating site from river to give people access to the river’s edge for a true LA experience. The landscape design celebrates Los Angeles’ climate, capitalizing on the abundant sunshine and mild winter with generous outdoor space and indoor-outdoor connection. A series of terraced walkways interconnect the buildings while roof top gardens and decks create a seamless experience of indoor and outdoor spaces. The Project reflects California’s diverse plant ecologies by highlighting the site’s varied levels and micro-climatic conditions with contextually-appropriate planting design. The landscape concept balances the project’s unique urban industrial context with rich sensorial experiences through shade trees, fragrant native perennials and warm natural materials.
