Cargo Way Railscape

Cargo Way Railscape

Located in the Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood on land owned by the Port of San Francisco, the San Francisco Bay Railroad’s Railscape project is 2,000 linear feet of ecological and green habitat connection along Cargo Way and the Bay Railroad’s property line.

The Bay Railroad’s property fits into the larger San Francisco Blue Greenway and Bay Trail improvement plans which define a network of public access trails and corridors in the eastern neighborhoods that link established open spaces and create new recreational opportunities and green infrastructure in one of San Francisco’s most industrial areas.

The Cargo Way Railscape project implements goals from the Blue Greenway and Bay Trail improvement plans to sequester carbon and support habitat through the planting of shade-giving native trees and a plant palette capable of improving air quality and increasing the physical health and social vitality of the community. In addition to design, Studio-MLA worked with the Bay Railroad and the Port to lead community engagement and permitting efforts.
