Destination Crenshaw will be a community-inspired, 1.1-mile-long, outdoor museum that runs along Crenshaw Blvd, at the new Crenshaw/LAX Line in Hyde Park. The vision to create a living celebration of Black Los Angeles was prompted by the Metro’s decision to bring the Crenshaw/LAX Line to street level from 48th Street to 60th Street. Not only will the new rail line bring Angelenos to the Crenshaw area, it will serve as the gateway to the City of Los Angeles for riders from across the globe.
Located in the heart of the largest black community west of the Mississippi River, Destination Crenshaw will be the first project of its kind in LA. Using an iconic street as a backdrop and anchor for public art and streetscape design, the project will be built for, by, and in honor of the Crenshaw community, and will celebrate the significance of Black LA and the Crenshaw community.
Studio-MLA is working with Perkins + Will, Raw International, and Gallagher & Associates to imagine the urban design, streetscape, and landscape for this groundbreaking project. The overall vision is to provide a collection of spaces along both sides of Crenshaw Boulevard that will envelope visitors and residents in community-driven public art. The project will represent the culture and people of South LA and give everyone the opportunity to visit, experience, celebrate, and learn about the neighborhood and community.
The overall design will provide outdoor spaces that work cohesively to create a linear museum along Crenshaw Boulevard, create viewing opportunities of the Hollywood sign and downtown Los Angeles, mitigate storm runoff water, define character to the spaces that reflects the proposed program opportunities, and alleviate the urban heat island effect contributing to the sustainability of the Crenshaw neighborhood
