Pitzer College Student Housing Phase II

Pitzer College Student Housing Phase II

The terraced, multi-purpose landscape for Pitzer College’s newest dormitory provides an elegant transition from a remnant chaparral landscape surrounding the college to the more formally designed academic core. The design approached sustainability holistically. Outdoor zones define levels of activity through materiality. As the most active area, the gateway to campus is designed as an urban plaza with an outdoor classroom to host formal classes and gatherings. Closer to the dorms, a meadow and series of outdoor rooms made with natural and recycled materials and native trees and plants provide more intimate places for impromptu gatherings and everyday life. The project received LEED Platinum certification.
